An Ancient Therapy Practice
Holistic healing technique guided by modern chiropractic knowledge to reduce pain and inflammation.
What is Cupping Therapy?
Cupping therapy is an ancient form of holistic healthcare that uses strong suction cups placed along the back. While the exact origins of the treatment are a matter of debate among historians, this therapeutic treatment was used in ancient Chinese and Egyptian medical treatments. One of the oldest medical texts known, the Ebers Papyrus, details the treatment, as used in 1550 B.C.E. In ancient times, the treatment was also used for pulmonary treatments, such as for bronchitis or pneumonia. Modern studies have not shown significant efficacy for these treatments. However, cupping can reduce congestion, which can be beneficial for patients suffering from pulmonary conditions.
Treatment and Uses
The treatment starts with the placement of special suction cups along the back. These cups draw skin tissues up via suction. The suction vacuum helps increase blood flow to the target areas. After just a few minutes the cups are removed. The suction promotes circulation to the target areas. This helps reduce pain and inflammation, overall. Additionally, muscles in the target area can feel looser. Many patients experience a better range of motion after. Generally, the therapy it can be very effective in treating other musculoskeletal injuries, such as sprains, strains, and back injuries. Cupping can also relax connective tissues and muscles along the spine quickly and efficiently. More severe or chronic injuries may require multiple cupping sessions to be fully effective.
Cupping Circles
For people who have seen videos of what cupping is like, some are off-put by the marks the cups leave on the back. However, the red spots from the cups are not bruises and can fade away much sooner. Bruises are marks that occur when blood vessels rupture under the skin. Cupping marks, on the other hand, are caused by the movement of otherwise stagnant blood and fluids being drawn by the suction. The vacuum the cups creates helps draw the fluids to areas where injury and inflammation may limit flow. Most patients find the treatment to be a relaxing and therapeutic experience, not unlike a massage, Cupping helps soothe the nervous system and can help you achieve deep relaxation and pain relief.
